The subject is taken from a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook II, p.25, titled ‘King’s Palace at Portici – from the Boschetto’ and dated 2 September 1782 (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.5.24/25).1
