Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856

Probably commissioned by Dr Thomas Monro
Monro’s posthumous sale, Christie’s, London, 26 June 1833 (probably in 98, as one of four views of ‘Ruins of the Savoy Palace’ by Turner)
Bought by or on behalf of Turner
This sheet was probably not originally in the album. It seems to be one of the four Savoy drawings in Monro’s sale (lot 98) which were apparently acquired by Turner, hence the individual provenance given for this work; for the album’s general provenance see the introduction. Other ‘Monro School’ Savoy subjects are Tate D36523 and D36526 (Turner Bequest CCCLXXV 2, 5).
Technical notes:
The drawing is discoloured from prolonged exposure.
Verso:
Blank (laid down).
