This is based on John Robert Cozens’s (1752–1797) drawing in Beckford Sketchbook III, p.3, inscribed ‘From Salerno – Septr.19 [1782]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.6.3).1 It is interesting to note that Turner has reversed the tonal organisation of Cozens’s original.
