This sketch records the view from the Mont Cenis road above Susa, looking down the valley towards Turin. The church is that of St Vincent, the parish church of Giaglione. Turner painted a similar view from a higher viewpoint in a watercolour, A View along an Alpine Valley, Probably the Val d’Aosta (private collection).1 Another watercolour, Mountain Scene: Mist Rising (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut),2 shows a closely related view, but whilst painted in a manner suggesting some familiarity with Turner’s work, is certainly not autograph and might instead be the work of Turner’s companion on this tour, H.A.J. Munro of Novar.
