In this relatively detailed sketch Turner depicts the defensive fortress at Huy atop the crest of the Meuse valley ridge. Built in 1818 by the Dutch during their occupation of the town, the artist captures its stolid and dominating architectural presence. Beneath it, diminutive in comparison, is an array of local houses and buildings.
