This view was taken in the centre of Rotterdam and shows the old Stadhuis or Town Hall at right. It was located near the Kaasmarkt (Cheese Market), adjacent to today’s Botersloot Street. At the turn of the twentieth century the Town Hall was moved and the old building, shown here, was demolished. For other sketches of the Stadhuis, taken from slightly different angles, see Tate D32464, D32473; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 11, 15a.
Recto:
Inscribed in red ink by Ruskin ‘10’ and stamped in black ‘CCCXXI–10’, bottom right.
