The present identification of the subject, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is conjectural; the landscape painter John Doyle has suggested that the view shows Moel Hebog and the hills around Beddgelert from Llyn Dinas.1 A colour study based on this drawing is Tate D01115 (Turner Bequest XXXVI U).
