Rapidly drawn on the verso of D35451 (Turner Bequest CCCLIX 16), this pencil sketch depicts the small, ‘irregular market-place’ east of the collegiate chapel of Eu.1 An awning can be seen at the extreme left while the buildings bordering the open space, including the steeply pitched rooftop of the King Louis-Philippe’s summer palace, have been cursorily dashed down. The inscription ‘fish’ to right of the main group of figures identifies the produce on sale while the inscription to the far left may read ‘Sunday’, giving the day of the week.
