Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
The Interior of New Shoreham Church c.1798
D02342
Turner Bequest L A
Pencil and watercolour on laid buff paper, 705 x 584 mm
Stamped in black ‘L A’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The identification of this subject is due to architectural historian Christopher Wilson.1 The viewpoint is the north aisle or transept, looking into the nave. An unfinished watercolour, somewhat perfunctory in its execution, based as Finberg noted2 on Tate D02355 (Turner Bequest L N), this study is perhaps connected with an unfinished oil sketch of about the same date (Tate N05536).3 It is placed here as using a coarse buff paper support similar to that of Tate D00727, D00728, D01882, D08202 and D08203 (Turner Bequest XXIX V, W, XLIV F, CXIX O, P).
