At the top is a coastal profile, with an inscription Finberg read as ‘I. of England’, but which might perhaps be ‘I[sle] of Wight’ (see also folio 12 recto; D35509). A larger drawing is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, showing dramatic, billowing rainclouds over the sea. Compare the similarly slight studies on folio 9 verso opposite (D35504), and see the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views and inscribed studies of clouds and the sun over the sea scattered through it.
