This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The subject of this study – a view of Mont Blanc and the Castle of St Michael from above Servoz, a village situated between the gorges of La Fayet and Les Houches in the French Alps – was first identified by the Turner scholar David Hill.1 Turner had earlier recorded the view across the Arve Valley towards the Tour St Michel during his 1802 tour of the Alps, also on a loose sheet (Tate D04640; Turner Bequest LXXV 48). In 1836, he also made a slight sketch of the view in the Val d’Aosta sketchbook (Tate D29085; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 27a).
