This is a view of Teplitz (modern day Teplice in the Czech Republic), a town located in Bohemia near the Saxon border. At the time of Turner’s visit Teplitz was established as a fashionable spa resort: its warm springs, fine baroque buildings and surrounding hillsides were popular among the genteel of Europe. Turner’s prospect encompasses the buildings of the Schlossplatz in the foreground, the church and Schlossberg, a distant mountain crowned by a medieval castle. With the sketchbook turned upright, in accordance with the foliation, Turner has also rendered the figure of a standing woman as well as a band of hills at the uppermost register, which is continued on the folio opposite (Tate D30316; Turner Bequest CCCI 11).
For more sketches of Teplitz see Tate D30316–D30335; Turner Bequest CCCI 11–20a.
