Turner noted on D40557 near the beginning of this book that ‘Mr Landseer’ ordered a watercolour of this subject ‘size of the sketch’. This was the engraver John Landseer (1769–1852, father of Sir Edwin Landseer, the animal painter), who commissioned and engraved several Isle of Wight views from Turner; see the introduction to the contemporary Isle of Wight sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXIV). The watercolour has not been identified.
