Squared and inscribed by Turner in pencil with numbers along top and right edges, ‘[‘Wm’ or ‘Mr’] Carr’s Sttafford, [sic] | [?shire] Warehouse | Wyatt Carver and | Gilder | Sampon [sic] low | the [?Cabinit’ top right, ‘[?½] Whole Breath [sic] | [?Colonnade]’ centre right, and with numbers within the drawing
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg, who recognised this as ‘an early drawing’, listed it among the Perspective Diagrams (Tate; Turner Bequest CXCV) without associating it with the exhibited watercolour of 1792 (Tate D00121; Turner Bequest IX A), for which it was used as a study. The subject is within a roughly drawn margin.
Technical notes:
The right and bottom edges are reinforced with glued strips of paper. The sheet seems to have been folded by about 25 mm and stuck down on the right-hand edge.
