A dense collection of shipping occupies a central triangular section of this page. Ascending from left to right, the prow of a squat vessel can be seen, followed by a steamer’s chimney emitting a single wisp of smoke and, at the top, the tall mast of a sail-boat. As set out in the Introduction to the sketchbook Turner studied several harbours in this volume, including Southampton, St Peter Port, and Le Havre in the English Channel, as well as Quillebeuf and Caudebec-en-Caux on the Normandy banks of the Seine.
