Rendered with agile line, this study of Luxembourg was taken from a vantage point looking along the Alzette river valley. It incorporates St Michael’s Church at top left; the eighteenth-century two-storey Pont du Château, which connects the old town with the fortified Rocher du Bock at centre; and finally the castle with the French military engineer Vauban’s towers. This sketch and those on folio 32 verso and 33 recto (Tate D28228–D28229; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 32a–33) contributed to a gouache, pen and ink and watercolour drawing on blue paper of the Pont du Château and the Bock (Tate D20249; Turner Bequest CCXXI P).
At top right Turner has made a small sketch of a rocky gradient and building.
