This sheet has been worked up somewhat perfunctorily in colour, perhaps at a slightly later date than the underlying pencil drawing. Finberg1 wondered if Edward Dayes (1763–1804) was the artist, but on the whole there seems no reason to doubt Turner’s authorship, at a moment when he was absorbing Dayes’s manner and experimenting widely in the watercolour medium. Compare the technique of Tate D00692 (Turner Bequest XXVIII G). However, note that two drawings very similar in style seem to be pupils’ copies (Tate D00382, D00866; Turner Bequest XXIII H, XXXII J); the latter may have been touched by Turner himself.
