This appears to be a view of Charles James Fox’s villa at St Anne’s Hill, overlooking Chertsey in Surrey, with the tower of St Peter’s Church; it is continued a little way onto folio 3 verso opposite (D20562). See also the views on folios 6 recto, 6 verso–7 recto and 7 verso (D20567–D20570); the profile on folio 5 verso (D20566) may conversely be that of the hill itself in the distance. The house does not survive, and the immediate view east over the Thames Valley is now obscured by dense woodland. Turner may have been considering a panoramic view including Fox’s house as one of his illustrations to Samuel Rogers’s Poems, but settled instead for more intimate views of the house and garden, as recorded towards the other end of this sketchbook (see the Introduction).
