Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Skyrrid Farm and Ysgyryd Fawr 1792
D00144
Turner Bequest XII O
Pencil and watercolour on white wove paper, 340 x 241 mm
Stamped in black ‘XII O’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This is an unfinished watercolour based on Tate D00143 (Turner Bequest XII N); drawings recording other stages in the development of the subject are Tate D40039 (Turner Bequest XVII F [verso]) and D00145 (Turner Bequest XII P), the last being a finished work. The present work is the only version to use the upright format. As Finberg observed,1 the view in D00143 ‘is modified and recast ... but he was dissatisfied with it, left it unfinished, and began again’ with D00145. The introduction of the vigorous figure of a countryman with yoke and pails is characteristic of Turner’s determination already at this date to introduce lively staffage into his finished views.
There are colour trials in the top right corner.
