These rough and swiftly rendered sketches may show the Bohemian town of Elbogen, inscribed ‘Elbogn’ by Turner at bottom right. Elbogen is known today as Loket, in the modern day Czech Republic. The town is dominated by a twelfth-century Gothic castle, which is probably depicted in the central sketch. See also Tate D30744; Turner Bequest CCCIV 60.
