This rough sketch is Turner’s fifth drawing of Selkirk. Having drawn the town as he approached it from the south-west (folios 40–41; D26173–D26174), Turner continued north along the western side of the Ettrick Water and made this quick sketch from the north-west. The towered building on the hill above the water at the centre of the sketch is the Town Hall. Sketches of Selkirk continue on folio 42 (D26176).
There is a light brown stain at the top centre-right of the page and a pale water stain at the bottom right.
