This is Turner’s final sketch of Selkirk as seen from the banks of the Ettrick Water. The view is probably from the north-west, as it comes at the end of a sequence made as the artist travelled past the town on his way north to Galashiels: folios 40–42 (D26172–D26176). The town itself is not visible in this sketch, which concentrates on Selkirk Bridge. A separate sketch at the bottom left of the page, drawn with the sketchbook inverted, shows part of the bridge in more detail.
There is a pale water stain at the upper right of the page and a light brown stain at the bottom centre-left.
