Finberg listed this sheet with miscellaneous drawings of about 1799–1801, but the palette and technique are similar to that of watercolours of Valle Crucis Abbey and Llangollen (Tate D00703, D00861; Turner Bequest XXVIII R, XXXII E), and it shares with the view of Valle Crucis an intensely atmospheric use of light and shade. The scene may be, like those, a landscape on the River Dee near Llangollen, but a precise location has not been identified and the drawing may record Turner’s experience at some other point in his Midland tour.
Verso:
A slight pencil sketch of a figure; some colour blots.
