This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
As the Turner scholar David Hill has determined, this sheet depicts the Sarriod de la Tour Castle in the town of Saint-Pierre in Italy’s Aosta Valley.1 The stone structure was in place by the twelfth-century, but was greatly expanded during the fifteenth-century by the Sarriod family. Another sketch, D34890 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 396) records a slightly more distant view of the castle.
