These rough and swiftly rendered jottings are records of various local scenes encountered by Turner as he sailed the Moselle. The artist has made note of boats with their awnings up, a crock and barrel, and other light river craft. There is also a slight sketch of figures in a boat in front of what is thought to be the village of Klotten. The ruins of the late fifteenth-century Augustinian Convent at Stuben are sketched on the opposite side of the page, in loose and abbreviated line.1 Turner had visited the convent during his 1824 tour of the Moselle region, making sketches in the Rivers Meuse and Moselle and the Moselle (or Rhine) sketchbooks (Tate D19780–19782, D20165, D20172; Turner Bequest CCXVI 115–116, CCXIX 4, 11).
