The location of this subject, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is apparently the Wyndcliff, where the road from Chepstow to Monmouth skirts the steep drop to the valley of the Wye. Like the study on the preceding page, folio 15 recto (D01335; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 81), this sketch was perhaps used as a source for the Liber Studiorum plate (see under Tate D08132; Turner Bequest CXVII E), and hence for the late painting derived from it Landscape with a River and Bay in the Distance (Musée du Louvre, Paris).1
