Turner made drawings at Ripon in his North of England and Tweed and Lakes sketchbooks (Tate D00925, D00926, D01008, D01009; Turner Bequest XXXIV 19, 20, XXXV 5, 6); this sketch and Tate D01098 (Turner Bequest XXXVI D) were apparently made during brief stops on his way out of the town. Here he has crossed the River Ure and climbed the Ure Bank to draw the panorama dominated by the Cathedral. The Minster became the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Ripon in 1836.
