What was originally the other half of the sheet is Tate D02364 (Turner Bequest L W), with an interior view of Christ Church Hall, and it is possible that the inscription at the lower right here refers to that drawing. Both studies were used for finished watercolour views of Christ Church commissioned by Lord Stormont, later Earl of Mansfield, an alumnus of the college. Other subjects for Mansfield are based on studies in the South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00659; Turner Bequest XXVI 97) and the Smaller Fonthill sketchbook (Tate D02240; Turner Bequest XLVIII 5).
