This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The Turner scholar David Hill noted that this view of Nus in the lower Aosta Valley, Italy, is taken from near the village’s western entrance.1 Turner also sketched the nearby Castle of Fenis (Tate D34894; Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 400).
