Turner Bequest XXVIII E

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Another, slightly different view of the same subject is in the South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00575; Turner Bequest XXVI 22). The present work is either a preparatory study or, more probably, a finished watercolour developed from the South Wales page, perhaps for the Mr ‘Pope’ noted on the back of the sheet.
This may be Alexander Pope the miniature painter (1763–1835), who was a patron of Turner in these years, but it is not certain that the inscription is in Turner’s hand. See also the verso of Tate D00572 (Turner Bequest XXVI 19) in the South Wales sketchbook. Further subjects commissioned by Mr Pope were to be recorded in the Hereford Court sketchbook; see Tate D01261, D01304, D01351 (Turner Bequest XXXVIII 11a, 50a, 97).
Verso:
Blank; inscribed by ?Turner in pencil ‘Pope’; blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram.
