The finished watercolour of this subject, probably that ordered by Mr Kershaw (see the list on D40557 near the front of this sketchbook), is now in the British Museum, London (Salting Bequest).1 A copy of the pencil drawing by a protegée of Ruskin’s, Isabella Jay, is in the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Turner made a drawing of the view over Newport from St Woolos’s church in his Smaller South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00470; Turner Bequest XXV 9).
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.
