This sketch shows the fortified Belgian town of Namur, situated at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse. Here Turner depicts Namur citadel from the Sambre, with the seventeenth-century Terra Nova barracks and the diagonal ‘rampe verte’, a walkway leading from the Sambre up the cliff to the citadel complex.
