This castle on an eminence in a mountainous valley is inscribed ‘Calion[?]’. There is a village in the foreground with a church spire, left, and another church spire deep in the valley to right. The setting is probably the Val d’Aosta, in the area of Verres and Issogne, but no modern placenames in the area are readily identifiable with Turner’s inscription (and a sketch of Susa occurs nearby in the sketchbook (D29293; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 44a).
