Here Turner has produced sketches of scenes and landscapes encountered on the Moselle near Cochem, as well as a fairly detailed and agile drawing of the city itself. There are two swiftly rendered jottings of locals transporting barrels and other cargo onto a boat as well as some cursory sketches of rowing boats. Above the latter of these is an inscription which appears to read ‘Beaching a boat’. The carefully wrought prospect of Cochem incorporates the Reichsburg at the top of the mount, the Chapel of Saint Roch, the medieval fortified walls of the city, and the Gothic Church of St Martin with its striking onion cupola.
