With the sketchbook turned upside down, here Turner pictures the Slaughden Martello Tower at Aldeburgh, Suffolk. The tower features in the foreground of Turner’s highly finished watercolour Aldborough, Suffolk of around 1826 (Tate N05236 and Tate impression T04522). With the sketchbook turned in accordance with the foliation, cursory sketches of the coast at Aldeburgh come into view. Visible is the profile of the Church of St Peter and Paul and the windmill on the shore. Turner has inscribed ‘Slaughden’ at top right. See also Tate D18266–D18271; Turner Bequest 56–59.
