This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
Turner’s view encompasses three of the castles in Italy’s Aosta Valley, with the castle of St Pierre on the right, Sarriod la Tour in the centre and the Chatel Argent in the distant left. Technical notes:
There is a watermark: ‘C ANSELL 1828’. As well as using sheets such as this one, which he must have taken with him when he travelled to the Alps, Turner also seems to have used some locally purchased paper during his 1836 tour – see the Technical Notes in the entry for D34195 (Turner Bequest CCCXLII 11).
