Joseph Mallord William Turner Looking up Glenkinglas from Cairndow 1801

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 8 Verso:
Looking up Glenkinglas from Cairndow 1801
D03292
Turner Bequest LVII 8a
Pencil and watercolour with some gouache on white cartridge paper prepared with a buff–grey ground, 149 x 118 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject is continued on folio 9 recto (D03293). David Hill suggests1 that a watercolour in the British Museum, London, known as Mountain Study: A View in North Wales2 is related to this sheet. His proposal seems correct; Turner’s sketch was evidently made when he had descended Glenkinglas and was looking back towards Rest and Be Thankful, Beinn an Lochain (901 metres) and Ben Arthur (881 metres) to the right. The conical peak of Ben Lomond (974 metres) obscured by cloud, but is visible in the British Museum work.
See folios 10 verso–11 recto and folio 12 recto (D03296–D03297, D03299). For the general setting, see under folio 4 verso (D03284).
