J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

The two sketches on this page are of Dunstaffnage Castle as seen from Loch Etive to the east. Both are more panoramic than his other sketches of this view (see folio 89; D26916), taking in a wide expanse from south-west at the left to north-west at the right. They were made from just west of Connel Ferry (folio 82; D26903), as the rapids from the Falls of Lora can be seen on the loch at the right. Dunstaffnage Castle is shown as a broken box shape at the centre of each sketch, with the mountains of Mull and Morvern beyond to the left and right. The sketch at the bottom of the page takes in a view of almost 180 degrees, from the south bank of Loch Etive on the left, to Ardmucknish Bay at the mouth of the Loch, and to the north of the loch on the right.
