This is a view that had been made famous by Richard Wilson (1713–1782), who painted two versions of the composition in the mid-1760s (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery). Another study, taken from a viewpoint not far from this, is Tate D03649 (Turner Bequest LX a H).
