Matthieu Pinette has identified this sketch as a north-easterly view across Le Tréport harbour towards the village of Mers.1 On the right, the harbour’s eastern pier and lighthouse have been achieved with rapid ochre, pink, and grey washes, while the chalk cliffs in the distance are composed of an area of ‘reserved’ white paper.
