Inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, the sketch on the right-hand side of this page depicts the interior of a Gothic building. Although this part of the sketchbook is dominated by depictions of the ruins of Netley Abbey in Hampshire, the roof of this structure is intact and may represent the same edifice seen on folios 53 verso (D23620; Turner Bequest CCLII 53a) and 54 recto (D23621; Turner Bequest CCLII 54). The crumbling arcades of Netley Abbey, bisected by the delicate form of a sapling, appear in the top left-hand corner. The abbey was the subject of particular study in this sketchbook, and recurs on multiple pages; see folio 32 verso (D23581; Turner Bequest CCLII 32a) for the main entry on this site.
