The first attempt at a heading is smudged and partially deleted, as is ‘La tien’ in the fifth line from the end. See also the French grammar notes on the recto and verso of the front flyleaf (D40767–D40768).
Turner has also written ‘Mr Lowther’ in pencil at the bottom right, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. Otherwise, the lower part of the page has been filled with the endorsement of the Executors of the Turner Bequest, Henry Scott Trimmer, Charles Lock Eastlake and John Prescott Knight, in brown ink ‘No 379 | 85 leaves of pencil | pen ink – & colour | H.S. Trimmer’ and in pencil ‘C.L.E.’ and ‘JPK’ at the bottom left.
