Joseph Mallord William Turner Inscription by Turner: Financial Notes 1840

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 1 Recto:
Inscription by Turner: Financial Notes 1840
D32263
Turner Bequest CCCXX 1
Pencil on wove paper washed with pale green, 149 x 89 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘520 | 1 = 30 Carlo m[...]’ at top
The ‘2’ in Turner’s first line appears to overwrite a ‘1’, or possibly vice versa, but the significance of these figures and what appears to be an associated name is unclear. There are other brief notes inside the front cover opposite (D41025).
This page and its hurried inscription are not mentioned in Finberg’s 1909 Inventory; unusually, the verso (D32264; Turner Bequest CCCXX 1v) is the numbered and stamped side documented there.1

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Technical notes:
The page is extensively stained, possibly as a result of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood. It is the recto of the front free endpaper, and its green paper is laminated with the first leaf of the regular white wove comprising the main body of the book (see the verso, D32264). It is continuous with the inside of the front cover (D41025), where the green paper is laminated in turn over a bellows-type pocket.
