Drawing from a lofty vantage point in the hills, here Turner has rendered a prospect of Arundel Park and Castle in West Sussex (see Tate D18418; Turner Bequest CCX 63). Turner has taken the sketch from behind the Castle, a viewpoint which afforded him the fullest extent of the Arun valley and the English Channel in the distance (see Tate D18430, D18432; Turner Bequest CCX 69, 70). The drawing is associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England, in particular Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
