Joseph Mallord William Turner Houses and Trees on a Bank Overlooking the Solway Firth 1801

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 185 Verso:
Houses and Trees on a Bank Overlooking the Solway Firth 1801
D03273
Turner Bequest LVI 183a
Pencil on white wove paper, 184 x 114 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject is continued on folio 186 recto opposite (D03274; Turner Bequest LVI 184). Finberg identified the view as Gretna Green,1 presumably on the basis of the inscription on folio 187 recto (D03276; Turner Bequest LVI 185); this conjecture is likely to be correct.
Other drawings at Gretna Green are on folios 180 verso–181 recto, 183 verso–184 recto and 186 verso–187 recto (D03263–D03264, D03269–D03270, D03275–D03276; Turner Bequest LVI 178a–179, 181a–182, 184a–185).
