The subject of this sketch is not conclusively identified although it may represent a view of the hills and river plain surrounding the city of Lyon. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 52 verso (D14073). Visible in the bottom right-hand corner is a bridge which may be the same one which features in a sketch on folio 54 (D14075).
