J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This sketch looks east up Glencoe from the track approaching Loch Achtriochtan from the west. From a slight rise we look down on the Coe River from the track and along the glen with the Notched Ridge (Aonach Eagach) to the left, and the mountains of Stob Coire nam Beith and Stob Coire nan Lochan at the right. There are similar sketches looking up the Glen on folios 26 and 26 verso (D26791, D26972), and views made when Turner reached Loch Achtriochan on folio 31 (D26801). At the right of this page, drawn with the sketchbook turned to the left, is a rough sketch that may show the outline of distant hills. The sketch may be inscribed ‘Stalk’, in which case it may show the Morvern coast near Castle Stalker (see folio 38 verso; D26814).
