Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps began in Geneva, where he and his travelling companion, the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar may have stayed at the lakeside Hotel Bergues.1 For more information about the tour, see the Introduction to this section.
Turner also made a watercolour of Geneva, perhaps partially based on the present study, which shows the city from a similar viewpoint (private collection2); he also made various other sketches of the lake; for more information, see the entry for D34195 (Turner Bequest CCCXLII 11).
