At the upper register Turner has produced a cursory jotting of fortifications at Luxembourg, followed by other drawings of the same subject rendered with more agile line. At the gutter of the sketchbook the artist has drawn a quick plan of the topography of Luxembourg City: helpful given its complex arrangement of river valleys, plateaux, citadels and fortifications. A little of the plan extends onto the folio opposite (Tate D28285; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 66).
