This is one of three similar views of Bonnington Linn from upstream to the north; see also folios 7 verso and 8 verso (D26272, D26274). The waterfall is shown at the very centre of the sketch and there is a sheer wall of rock above the gorge in the foreground at the left which is also seen from a little further away on folio 7 verso.
Turner made these sketches on his way from Corra Linn to Bonnington Linn. For further sketches of the Falls of Clyde see folio 1 verso (D26260).
